Massage is one form of treatment used in manual therapy. There are two main types of massages: medicinal massages and wellness massages.
In medicinal massages, the skin, connective tissues, and musculature is manipulated using stretching, pulling, and pressure techniques. These massages are used to treat tension, back pain, migraines, as well as other disorders. They have a wide range of effects on the entire body. A massage can increase the flow of blood to muscles and connective tissue, unblock veins and lymphatic vessels, and regulate muscle tension.
In contrast, wellness massages, which are purely about feeling good, can bring the vegetative nervous system into harmony, have a relaxing or stimulating effect, and increase mental well-being. They serve a more preventative purpose – since only a vital and relaxed body can perform at its full capacity.
